Be a part of our Kids Book Club and c<\/span>elebrate Native authors and children\u2019s literature<\/span> at St. Kateri<\/span> August 12<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span> and 14<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span> from 12:00-4:00 pm. <\/span>The afternoon of entertainment and enriching activities will feature book readings from <\/span>Author Maria Des <\/span>Jarlait<\/span> and art with <\/span>Negwes<\/span> White, pizza and ice cream, and more! Members from Northwestern\u2019s Center for Native American and Indigenous Research will also be present to<\/span> conduct surveys, researching the importance of Native authored children\u2019s literature.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Book Reading by Local Author <\/span>Maria Des Jarlait<\/span><\/h4>\n

Maria \u201cWhite cedar woman\u201d<\/a>\u00a0is an indigenous woman who is from the Arikara tribe of Fort Berthold reservation in North Dakota and Ojibwe from Red Lake, Minnesota. She was raised on the reservation in North Dakota and had big city dreams.\u00a0 She went on to college in Chicago, Il where she earned her bachelor\u2019s degree in Early Childhood Education and English as a second language. She is married to her best friend Joel and has two daughters Aiyanna and Ayasha that keep her plenty busy.\u00a0 She teaches Preschool in Illinois where she seen the need for books that represent Native American children as people of today. She wrote this book based on her experiences as a child with her grandmother and her two daughter\u2019s experiences with their adventurous grandmother Peggy as well. This is her story that she hopes to inspire more Native American children to dream big.\u00a0 Miigwetch (thank you)!<\/p>\n

We are offering six Native-authored books that undo harmful stereotypes and inaccurate information presented to Native and non-Native children in classrooms and libraries while amplifying the work of Indigenous authors whose stories positively and authentically reflect the diversity and strengths of Native people and communities.<\/div>\n

The six Native-authored books are available at no cost to participating families.<\/p>\n

Who Can Participate?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Families of all backgrounds with children aged 5-11 are eligible to participate.<\/div>\n

Families will also be asked to participate in a research study related to the children\u2019s books.\u00a0To participate and reserve your books, please register in advance\u00a0here.<\/a><\/div>\n

About the Research Study<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Participating families will be asked to take part in surveys asking questions about you, and about stories and books.\u00a0Families of all backgrounds with children aged 5-11 are eligible to participate.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A legal guardian needs to be present with children to be eligible. Surveys will take between 15 minutes and an hour, and you will be invited to 2 community events in total and asked to participate in the survey at or after each event.<\/p>\n
