At\u00edka\u2019s Medicine<\/strong><\/a> is a Native American picture book. It takes place in Fort Berthold reservation in North Dakota with At\u00edka (grandma in Arikara) and her granddaughter Ayasha (little one in Ojibwe). Ayasha is visiting her At\u00edka for the summer and learns how to overcome being different at school such as poverty, culture beliefs and bullying. At\u00edka is a colorful, funny character who ends up using her talent of making the best fry bread on the rez from her house. This is all to raise money for Ayasha and her big sister Aiyanna\u2019s school clothes and supplies. She shows her granddaughters how to get their point across positively about who they are. Their\u00a0At\u00edka\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0medicine is from their family\u2019s strength.<\/p>\n

Maria \u201cWhite cedar woman\u201d<\/a> is an indigenous woman who is from the Arikara tribe of Fort Berthold reservation in North Dakota and Ojibwe from Red Lake, Minnesota. She was raised on the reservation in North Dakota and had big city dreams.\u00a0 She went on to college in Chicago, Il where she earned her bachelor\u2019s degree in Early Childhood Education and English as a second language. She is married to her best friend Joel and has two daughters Aiyanna and Ayasha that keep her plenty busy.\u00a0 She teaches Preschool in Illinois where she seen the need for books that represent Native American children as people of today. She wrote this book based on her experiences as a child with her grandmother and her two daughter\u2019s experiences with their adventurous grandmother Peggy as well. This is her story that she hopes to inspire more Native American children to dream big.\u00a0 Miigwetch (thank The Mitchell Museum, in partnership with the Evanston Public Library and Northwestern University Center for Native American and Indigenous Research, kicks off a new project to ensure Indigenous representation in children\u2019s literature.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

To make sure authentic Native literature is accessible to everyone, we will offer a curated selection of six Native-authored books at no cost to families and children (ages 5-11) of all backgrounds. Families will also be asked to participate in a research study related to the children\u2019s books. Exhibit Extended through 2024<\/h2>\n

Due to overwhelming public interest, the Mitchell Museum is pleased to extend our No Rest: The Epidemic of Stolen Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2Spirits<\/strong> exhibit through 2024. Visitors now have additional time and opportunities to learn more about the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and two spirits (MMIWG2S) through this powerful exhibit featuring 35 original works from 12 Indigenous artists.<\/p>\n
